Insulin aspart is a fast-acting human form of insulin that effectively lowers blood sugar levels for type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients.

Two expedients added to the formulation include Vitamin B3 (niacinamide) and L-arginine. This is to increase the speed of absorption faster and stability when compared to other mealtime insulin’s. It works almost immediately after application.

Typically this insulin is paired with longer-acting insulin types (basal insulin) that work throughout the day (between meals and while you sleep).

Fiasp is a fast-acting mealtime insulin aspart formulation used to treat diabetes. Fiasp will start to lower your blood sugar within 20 minutes after starting a meal. Due to this fast action, Fiasp should typically be combined with intermediate- or long-acting insulin preparation.

Cartons of 5 units are available. Each Fiasp cartridge contains 3mL of 100 units/mL solution for injection. Fiasp is also available in vial form.

Warnings and Precautions

Low blood sugar is the most common adverse effect of insulin products, including Fiasp.

If low blood sugar or high blood sugar reactions are not treated, they can cause loss of consciousness, coma, or even death.

Blood sugar levels should be monitored for all patients with diabetes.

Fiasp should be injected up to 2 minutes before the start of the meal. When necessary, Fiasp may be administered up to 20 minutes after starting the meal.

An accidental mix-up between Fiasp and other insulin products has been reported. Always carefully check the insulin label before each injection to avoid mix-ups between insulin products.

Do not dilute or mix Fiasp with other insulin products or solutions, except when given into your vein under medical supervision.

Fiasp should generally be used in a regimen with intermediate- or long-acting insulin (plus metformin for type 2 diabetes as recommended) or with insulin infusion pump therapy to maintain blood sugar levels.

Only use Fiasp if the solution looks water-clear and colorless.

Usage

Fiasp is for injection under the skin (subcutaneously) or continuous infusion in pumps. Administration in a pump will require comprehensive instruction by your healthcare professional. Do not inject into a vein or muscle.

Always vary the site you inject within the same region to avoid lumps. The best places to give yourself an injection are the front of your thighs, the front of your waist (abdomen), or the upper arm. Your insulin will work more quickly if you inject it around the waist.

You should always measure your blood glucose regularly. Talk about your insulin needs with your doctor and Diabetes Nurse Educator.

Do not change your insulin unless your doctor tells you to. Follow their advice carefully. If your doctor has switched you from one type or brand of insulin to another, your dose may have to be adjusted by your doctor.

Due to the faster onset of action, Fiasp should be injected up to 2 minutes before starting a meal. When necessary, Fiasp may be administered up to 20 minutes after starting a meal.

Side Effects

The most common side effect related to Fiasp is hypoglycemia which in some cases may be life-threatening.

– Heart failure and fluid retention may occur with the concomitant use of thiazolidinediones (TZDs). Dosage reduction or discontinuation may be recommended if any severe symptoms or complications such as heart failure are experienced.

– As with other insulins, the use of Fiasp insulin can lead to other life-threatening hypokalemia, which may cause ventricular arrhythmia, paralysis, and even death. It’s important to monitor potassium levels to prevent hypokalemia and consult your physician if treatment is necessary.

– Infusion set or pump malfunctions can lead to ketoacidosis or rapid onset of hyperglycemia.

– Other adverse reactions may include allergic reactions, injection site reactions, weight gain, lipodystrophy, rash, pruritus, and hypoglycemia.

Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.
